United Airlines will introduce a direct air connection between Ljubljana and New York in May 2027. Board a plane at Brnik and then straight across the Atlantic to New York. Or, to be completely precise, to Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey, one of the main airports serving the New York area. The new route will launch on 12 May 2027, with United Airlines flying between Newark and Ljubljana four times a week. Flights from Ljubljana will operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. According to the currently published timetable, the flight will depart Jože Pučnik Ljubljana Airport at 9:55 and arrive in Newark at 13:40 local time. In the opposite direction, the flight will leave Newark at 16:20 and land in Ljubljana at 6:40 the following morning. One-way fares start at 750.

At first glance, this is merely another new air route. In reality, it is considerably more than that. After 36 years, Ljubljana will once again have a regular direct connection to New York. The last such flights were available until the spring of 1991, when JAT connected Belgrade, Ljubljana and New York. This time there will be no stopover and no continuation of the journey from another city. United will operate the route directly between Newark and Ljubljana.

New York has long been the most sought-after intercontinental destination without a direct connection from Ljubljana, while the United States is the largest market that has so far not been linked to Ljubljana Airport by a regular direct route. Until now, Slovenian passengers almost always had to travel first to one of Europe’s larger aviation hubs. That meant extra waiting, another take-off, another landing and, above all, more chances for something to go wrong along the way.

Tickets for flights between Newark and Ljubljana are already on sale on the United Airlines website, although the operation of the route still depends on the necessary approvals from the relevant authorities. If everything goes according to plan, next May we will be able to fly across the Atlantic from Brnik without changing planes for the first time in 36 years.

Finally. Because for a country that likes to present itself as a green, boutique and five-star destination, it was rather strange that it could not be reached from the US on a regular direct flight. Now there will be at least one less obstacle. Ljubljana–New York in one go. No running through Frankfurt Airport and no wondering whether the luggage will survive the connection with us.
