If you don’t like history, nature, whisky, peace, friendly people or a slower pace of life, then Scotland is probably one of the last countries you should visit. Personally, I only regret that I didn’t discover it sooner, because after spending several days driving through Scotland, from its cities to remote villages and from ancient castles to the Scottish Highlands, I already know that I will return.

During this trip I managed to explore only a small part of the country, travelling from towns to tiny villages, from castles that have stood on cliffs and resisted the wind for centuries to narrow roads where there is nobody around and, for a moment, you become convinced that you must have taken a wrong turn somewhere. That is exactly where the charm of Scotland lies. It is not loud, it does not desperately demand your attention and it does not try to sell itself to you at every corner. It is simply there, waiting for you to discover it, while people seem less interested in staring at their phones and more interested in actually living their lives.

History is present almost everywhere you go. Back home we often talk proudly about something being a hundred years old, while in Scotland it sometimes feels as though every stone is part of a story that began several centuries ago. The castles are not merely tourist attractions where you take a few photographs and move on, but reminders of clans, battles, kings, rebellions and generations of people who lived in a world very different from ours. There are so many of them that after a while you stop being surprised when another castle suddenly appears on the horizon.

Then there is the Scottish landscape, which is almost impossible to explain properly through photographs. Drone footage does not really help, and neither does the best Instagram filter, because the Scottish Highlands are something you have to experience rather than simply look at on a screen. You have to stand in the middle of nowhere, listen to the wind and realise how many different shades of green can exist in one place. You have to drive along narrow single-track roads and stop every few kilometres because you simply have to take another photograph, only to discover five minutes later that you need to stop again because the view has somehow become even better.

If you do not like whisky, that is not a problem either, because I do not drink it myself. Despite that, I found the Scottish distilleries fascinating, not because of the alcohol but because of the stories, the tradition and the people who have spent generations creating something they are genuinely proud of. Once you listen to them talk about their craft, you quickly realise that whisky in Scotland is much more than just a drink. It is part of the country’s history, culture and identity.

What impressed me just as much were the people, because their friendliness does not feel like the kind of tourist friendliness where someone smiles simply because it is part of the job or because they are hoping to get a few pounds out of your pocket. It feels genuine. Someone helps you because they actually want to help, starts a conversation because they are genuinely curious about where you come from, and suddenly you realise that you have been talking to a complete stranger for ten minutes simply because neither of you is in a hurry to be somewhere else.

Perhaps time itself is one of the biggest differences you notice in Scotland. Life seems to move a little more slowly, without the constant impression that everybody is rushing somewhere or competing with everyone around them. On the roads, nobody seems desperate to prove that they are faster or more important than the person in front, and nobody immediately starts honking or swearing because a foreign driver is slightly confused at a junction. There is simply less of that constant nervousness we have somehow accepted as a normal part of everyday life. People live their lives, and from what I could see, they seem to be doing it rather well.

If what you are looking for is endless shopping centres, crowds, constant rushing and the feeling that you always have to be somewhere else five minutes ago, then Scotland probably is not the right destination for you. The same is true if your ideal holiday consists of fashionable parties where influencers spend more time recording themselves having fun than actually having fun.

But if you are looking for history, spectacular nature, genuine people, peace and that increasingly rare feeling that perhaps the world is not quite as crazy as it sometimes seems back home, then there is a very good chance that you will fall in love with Scotland on your first day. There is an even better chance that, before you have even left the country, you will already be thinking about when you can come back.
