A few days ago, I wrote about Dušan Smodej and his claim that he and Luka Mesec had used cocaine together on New Year’s Eve 2021. The story was juicy enough to flood the Slovenian media within hours, while Mesec dismissed the allegations as fantasies and deliberate lies. Smodej claimed one thing, Mesec another, and we were left where we usually are with stories like this. One person’s word against another’s.

Today, Luka Mesec published the results of a toxicology test carried out at the Institute of Forensic Medicine. His urine showed no trace of amphetamines, benzodiazepines, opiates, methadone, THC, cocaine or its metabolites, barbiturates, methamphetamines, PCP or tricyclic antidepressants. Every result was negative. Just as it was in 2021, when he went for testing immediately after the allegations and showed that he does not use drugs. This is where the more interesting part of the story begins.

The test does not tell us what happened at a New Year’s party almost five years ago. Cocaine, or its main metabolite, can generally be detected in urine for a few days after use, not years later. So today’s negative result does not prove that Luka Mesec did not take cocaine in 2021.

But, and this is a rather important but, Smodej’s statement is not proof that he did. We still have only his claim about an event almost five years ago and Mesec’s denial. Today’s test proves only what such a test can prove at all: that none of the drugs tested for were detected in Mesec during the period the test can cover.

What interests me more about this whole story is something else. How quickly we went from a statement by a man whose credibility, given the circumstances of the entire affair, ought to be examined with particular care, to something close to a public trial. Headlines, comments, calls for testing, and crowds of people who apparently knew the result before the test had even been carried out. Even this morning, Info360 publicly called on Mesec to get tested. A few hours later, it published the result.

So now I am interested in what comes next. Will the people who spent three days demanding a test accept its result? Or will they say it was not the right test, that it was done too late, that he should have provided hair, nails or something else? Probably. Because with stories like this, it often ceases to be about proving facts at all. Once someone has constructed a story, every new piece of information has to be bent to fit it. That is precisely the problem.

If there is evidence, publish it. If there are witnesses, let them say what they saw. If there are photographs, messages or other verifiable information, let it come out. But an accusation alone is not proof, regardless of how good a headline it makes or how many clicks it brings.

Luka Mesec did something very simple. He took a test and published the result. It is negative. Just as it was in 2021. Perhaps it would be good to return, for a moment, to a rather boring but important rule in this story: the person making a claim must prove it. Not the person being accused.
