Slovenia will once again be at the heart of world cycling in May 2027. This time, not merely for a few kilometres: one of the Giro d’Italia stages will take place entirely on Slovenian roads. Giro d’Italia 2027 will begin in Trieste on 8 May, and the riders will cross into Slovenia on the first day, passing Lipica. The following day, 9 May, when we mark victory over Nazism and fascism, they face a 166 km stage from Ljubljana to Koper. The riders will have to tackle around 2,200 metres of climbing.

What does this mean for Slovenia? Above all, enormous exposure. Giro d’Italia is not merely a cycling race. It is one of the world’s biggest sporting events, watched by millions. While the cameras follow the riders, viewers around the world will also be looking at Slovenia. Our roads, landscape, towns, forests and Karst attractions. Things tourism bodies would otherwise showcase in expensive advertising campaigns will this time be part of a live television broadcast.

It is the kind of exposure that is difficult to achieve through conventional advertising. Especially if we know how to make proper use of it. And the benefits will not be limited to promotion. Cycling teams, support staff, journalists and fans will come to Slovenia. Hotels, restaurants, tourism providers and many local businesses could all benefit.

Of course, it will also mean road closures, traffic restrictions and some bad feeling among those who have no interest in cycling. But in my view, two days of slightly altered traffic arrangements are a very small price to pay for an opportunity like this.

I hope we will know how to make the most of it. Not merely for politicians’ photo opportunities and self-congratulation, but for Slovenia’s long-term promotion. This is not an insignificant expense: the sums involved are high.
